Hi all, I have written a book ‘Learn to learn’,here is a part of my book that may interest anyone who wishes to learn.
Learning... is a beautiful process
One has to practice this process to completely enjoy and understand its beauty.
Learning makes humans complete. We do not have a substitute for learning. Therefore it is essential for our survival.
I was personally inspired by the lives of two young women, from whom
I learn the true value of learning, and also the passion for books.
They are Anne frank and Helen Keller.
In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen –year old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they lived cloistered in the “secret annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In these brutal situations Anne frank writes a diary, which was discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life. From which one can learn her passion for learning, she even created codes!
In her dairy Anne writes, “We always long for Saturdays when our books come. Just like little children receiving a present. Ordinary people don’t know what books mean to us, shut up here. Reading, learning, and the radio are our amusements.” Yours, Anne
This book ‘The dairy of a young girl’ made a difference in my perception on learning.
Like wise Helen Keller’s book ‘The Story of My Life’ inspired me a lot as it expressed how much learning can improvise the life of a handicapped girl who also in a way like Anne frank lives in confinement. Helen Keller’s book also made a powerful impact in my mind about the importance of a teacher.
“Knowledge is love and light and vision.” –Helen Keller
To gain such powerful knowledge we have to learn.
By learning I don’t mean just browsing books or by hearting stuffs.
Learning is experiencing. Education is knowledge. It’s a way of life. It is attitude. It is knowing.
Lessons are not education.
Just text books are not education.
Knowledge is every thing that our mind tries to understand.
The keen interest to learn anything new is the basic need for education.
Education must not be forced, it must be searched for. Such an education will only be permanent.
With interest and sustenance any one can learn anything.
“I don’t like this subject, its tough” are not a right way of thinking for students.
This aptitude will be a hindering stone for students.
To avoid this we must love to learn.
Learning can change thoughts, intelligence and behavior.
Due to this student’s whole identity will improvise.
Once we begin to love learning then it’s all a new experience, one won’t feel the boredom of studying, and the monotonous stress.
Thus it all depends how we learn? Not what we learn.
We can learn through many tools such as teachers, books, cds, audio visual media, and practical experiments and so on. We must realize these are just tools only; our mind must make all the efforts to use these tools to gain knowledge. This effort would arise in ones mind only when he or she is determined enough to get knowledge, and be ready to love the process of learning.
Learning for marks or for a livelihood will never give us any pleasure. While learning for quenching our inquisitiveness, to know will not only make learning a lovely experience, but also will lift our mind to a higher level of understanding.
Knowledge gained through such a process will be like Mozart’s performance – perfect and complete.
How can we get this sort of an interest in learning?
A young student went to his Zen teacher and asked ‘Master, I have been trying to learn the art of Zen for the past 2 years, but I could not progress much, please help me to master the subject.’
The teacher said ‘follow me to the river and I will help you’
Once they reached the river, the teacher pushed the student into the river and forced the student to keep his head under water. After 10 minutes he let the student out of water. The student was very shocked but had no guts to ask the teacher anything.
The teacher calmly asked ‘now boy, what did you wanted most when you were inside water?’
The student without any hesitation said ‘air’
‘When you need Zen like Air then come to me I will teach you’ said the teacher.
“Some are born with intelligence,
Some achieve intelligence and
Some have intelligence thrust on them”
We must learn some how, it’s our duty and each student must realize this fact.
We must have a certain need to learn a subject, and then only we can master it.
This need must come from an interest on the subject, which may arise inherently in few and through other’s inspirations for most.
This need and interest will not only help one choose his or her favorable subject of study but also helps select the tool and mode of study as well.
When focusing on the subject and tool, it is not unlikely for a single person to be interested in more than one subject and tools.
For example one can master math as well as history through both books and teachers, depending upon their personal comfort level.
There aren’t any set of rules that says ‘this is how one must learn’.
While there are few methods of learning, derived and suggested by many scholars, if a student is comfortable then he or she can use these suggested method of learning.
Hence in my book I have suggested few such methods and tools for learning. It is up to the student to use these tools for his/ her personal achievements. Again achievement differs from person to person, for some it means marks, nice job and academic progress where as for others it means a pleasant experience of just knowing something new.
I hope you have a nice time reading this book and use it for your success.
